ACE communication and network models have played an increasingly important role in recent years for two major reasons. First, models of real-world systems are relatively easy for ACE experts to conceive and construct in network form. Second, network models can be communicated effectively to management as visual facsimiles of the real-world systems under consideration. For example, project planning and control problems are usually modeled and analyzed by the well-known network techniques CPM (Critical Path Method) and PERT (Program Evaluation and Review Technique). One of the most important functions of these techniques is to determine the longest time path through the network. This path is referred to as the critical path because it includes the project activities that require the most careful control in order to complete the project on time.
